Everybody can be a franchise consultant. All they have to do is read books, observe and ask questions. How do you tell a REAL franchise consultant from someone with only vicarious experiences to share without having to look at documents for his or her credentials?

I think I would always look at credentials first. i would be too worried about something going wrong and I would want to cover all bases. What is the point of people doing the course and legitimately doing the job if others just read some books and claim to do the same thing.

I would say that being a franchise consultant takes great skill and experience. I don’t think that reading books is just enough because the market is not always moving the same way it was written on the book. There could be differences as time passes by and a person who should be doing consultation work should be just as flexible to cope up with the market.

Everyone can be a franchise consultant even I can be. However, franchise consultant needs to build business rapport between the franchisee and the franchisor. I would be hard for entrepreneur to build trust to anyone. We should review the person's history and interests, their business experience and skills, and the characteristics that make up an attractive opportunity for the person.

As long as a person understands the way the market moves, I think he / she can be a franchising consultant. That person needs to be able to make decisions and analyze the situation.

Anyone can become a franchising consultant for as long as he has a good marketing network and outstanding interpersonal skills.
A potential franchisee will try to get as much franchising information they could get their hands on from someone they could trust and one whom they consider as an expert. Hence, a good frnachising consultant must also be of critical information which shows an earnings claim or any projection of franchisee profitability.

For me, it is alright if the consultant only has vicarious experience in franchising as long as he or she has a full understanding about it. He or she must know what he/she's talking about; the market trends; the in's and out's, and most of all he must be able to answer all of my questions with conviction.

It is advisable that the person you are seeking for help knows what he / she is saying. If you are seeking other people advises, make sure that you are talking to the right person.

I think as long as a person knows the do's and dont's about a business, he/she could be a good consultant. Sometimes without the help of what is written on those books it is better to advice someone from our own experiences.

Neither experience nor knowledge is enough for someone to be qualified as a franchise consultant. Though having experience would provide insight on how a business runs, one has to keep up with competition to survive in the business.
