I want to start a bookkeeping service from my home to be my business, I live in monterey county in CA and I find such mixed information on this topic? I want to operate under a fictious business name so do I have to get a business license?

Probably. Where I live every business is supposed to have one.

It really depends on where you live. Here, where I am, I don't need a business license to have an in-home business because I am in the county. Now, if I were working out of my home in the city limits I would need one.Also, if you are in the city you may want to check your zoning. The reason - if you have a lot of clients pulling up at your home all day your neighbors may not appreciate that and technically, if you aren't in a business zone the city could make you stop if you are distracting the neighbors. If you are going out and picking up your work from your clients then that shouldn't be a problem or if you have just a few clients I don't see where that would be a problem either.I would definitely see about registering your businesses name - that way your can make sure it is available to use and that no one else can use it.Good luck!

You will need to file a fictitious name application and all of the paperwork that goes with that, then you will want to check with City Hall to see if they require a business license.
