Default Family Franchise

1. Avoid offering the franchise to family members. I have learned that is is hard to deal with friends who had bought into the business because it was hard to say no to friends. What more if it was a family member?

2. Find a niche. Provide your market with the needs that have been ignored, overlooked or neglected by others. The ability to create a niche is the quickest way to financial success.

3. Innovate or stagnate.

4. Running a franchised outlet requires hard work and perseverance, so be sure your franchisees are up to the task.

5. Treat franchising as a marriage. When a franchise contract expires, evaluate your relationship with the franchisee. You have to make sure that your business rapport is still good renewing the contract.

A lot of people say that it is really hard to start any business with family members and this could cause dispute and division among themselves. Some businessman prefer to work alone because of this.

There have been a lot of horror stories of family members not speaking to each other because of business matters that lead to their misunderstanding eventually. This happened to my family and indeed it is very inevitable. Even if a family member is your business associate, blood relationships are forgotten when money is involved. This is very disappointing but true.

On the brighter side, there are also sucessful family corporations in the Global Market. But the horrible numbers still outweigh it. Like Gucci, a family member was gunned down by another family member.

Er, I think it's important to differentiate a family franchise from a family business. Do keep family off franchising a shop you have, or having a similar franchise as this will incite competition and may cause family complications. In a franchise arrangement where you are the franchiser and your family the franchisee, this may cause increased tensions as the relationship between franchiser and franchisee is that of pushing the franchisee to become an excellent franchise and help further the brand identity.

Most family members will only ask you if you had already earned from the stuff you are busy before they will jump in. Most franchisee choose to be alone to prevent rivalry.
