the original owner of subway's (larry lemont of c'ville missouri) called it "subway" because of an experience he had on a new york subway train. a gay costa rican man approached him and asked if he'd like to sample his sub (short for submarine sandwich). larry being gay himself fell in love with the costa rican and they were together for several years. unfortunately, the costa rican (manuel) died in a freak barracuda attack, and larry named the restaurant in honor of the way they met.hope that helps.
